Matt is the only challenger in the race for Los Angeles County Sheriff who has called for the Recall of George Gascon. Murders in Los Angeles have increase dramatically. After the recent murders of three women, Matt took a stand against this lawlessness. One elderly woman was murdered in her home in Beverly Hills. The second, a UCLA student was brutally murdered at work. Finally, an elderly nurse was murdered while commuting to work, while waiting for a bus.
Matt realized that there is not justice in George Gascon’s vision of justice. Matt signed the petition to Recall George Gascon. He is calling on all his supporters to support this recall effort.

HOMELESS

Matt takes a humanistic but realistic approach to homelessness. Matt realizes that we need to create a system that works. Matt would work closely with homeless advocates to provide proper housing, medical and mental health care. For the unhoused seeking change rapid rehousing is essential, along with permanent supportive services, income opportunities and at times upon the commission of serious crimes by our homeless citizens, intervention by our criminal justice system. As Sheriff Matt intends to host symposium and local workshops inclusive of Faith-Based organizations to find viable evidence based solutions that impact homelessness but also keeps our communities safe.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM
Matt believes that there needs to be changes to the criminal justice system. The changes should include proven evidence based programs with a track record of success. Reform requires a surgical approach to change, widespread community understanding and concurrence. As opposed to the Matt Rodriguez ham handed, failed reform of our current leadership. Community safety must be the goal of all reform efforts.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
It is critical that law enforcement and pertinent stakeholders throughout the community form partnerships in order to ensure public safety. Matt believes that the community and law enforcement should be one in the same. The relationship between the two is essential to maintaining public trust. Public safety is a shared responsibility that requires positive working relations built upon public consent, trust, understanding, and innovation. As Sheriff, Matt will rally the community to join the Sheriff’s Department to solve problems and create a safer community for all.

CONCEALED CARRY WEAPONS
When discussing personal safety, two factors arise… your Second Amendment rights and the local policies that either support your rights to defend yourself and your loved ones with a legal and registered firearm… or strip you of them. Yes my friends, we’re talking about the long-embattled CCW (Carry Concealed Weapon) debate.
There are two primary CCW policies: “Good-Cause” and Shall-Issue” … these titles are a bit deceiving so let me explain their common definitions.
Good-Cause means that you may be awarded a CCW by your local Sheriff or Police Chief if your reason is a valid one in their eyes via some special circumstance, such as an active threat upon your life or a special kind of employment where you may be carrying money or valuables within the public space—no CCW will be granted without a special circumstance that they deem valid.
Basically…Your Constitutional Right to carry a firearm on your person for Personal Defense is not a good enough reason to issue a CCW under the Good-Cause policy.
Conversely, Shall-Issue CCW Policy respects the Citizen’s Constitutional Right to protect themselves and their loved ones via a legally-owned and registered concealed firearm without the need to have a “special circumstance” or a hazardous vocation… and folks that is where I stand on this issue—As your Sheriff I’ll end Alex Villanueva’s restrictive Good-Cause CCW policy, replacing it with a Shall-Issue CCW program that respects the people’s Constitutional right to protect themselves with a firearm.
Now to be very clear… I’ll have a reasonable yet thorough application and background criteria to ensure that the CCWs I issue are being issued to the sane, responsible, law-abiding citizens of LA County. Again, safety is the number one goal.
